Like the Shakespearean line goes, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark".  Or rather, in the case of this primary season, the putrid smell is rising from the state of Indiana.

Indiana Senator Evan Bayh, an early endorser of Hillary Clinton, has politely placed pressure on House representatives Baron Hill, Brad Ellsworth, and Joe Donnolly to remain uncommitted to either Democratic candidate.

I knew I recognized that smell - the stench of hypocrisy.

Bayh gave himself permission to endorse a candidate, but doesn't want these representatives to do the same because he thinks it best they go the way of their constituency once they vote in the primary.

However, that is not how endorsements work: a high-ranking political official endorses to suggest to his constituency that after a complete weighing of all factors, he or she has come to an informed decision. Then, the constituency can take that official's decision to use it in their own weighing of all aspects relevant to the election season.

An endorsement is not a mandate, but rather only an advisement.

But what Evan Bayh hopes is that the central and southern half of Indiana state may be where Clinton could see success with the inauthentic, new persona she peddled in Pennsylvania.  And Bayh doesn't want the informed suggestions of any representatives who may or may not favor Obama to interfere with this strategy.

But like one of their brand, spanking new colleagues-- Andre Carson from Indianapolis who endorsed Obama-- these Indiana representatives need to grow a pair.

Whether they feel Clinton or Obama is the better candidate, Hill, Donnolly, and Ellsworth should make an endorsement because the timing makes it imperative that they do so.  This primary season is begging to be put out of its misery.  These representatives could, to the appreciation of millions, become the historical figures who finally end this decisively.

And just like Bill Richardson who endorsed Obama when Obama needed the morale boost, these representatives might incur the unfair, misguided rhetoric of Clinton supporters such as James Carville.

But what people like Carville don't understand is that this is not about the Clintons. This country is not a monarchy and the Clinton's are not a dynasty. Clinton is no more entitled to the presidency than Obama.  And Bayh should have no say in what these representatives do or say just because it might not favor his candidate.

And these Indiana representatives need to be able to  voice their consciences, to voice their opinions that could favorably influence the direction of this primary season to a reasonable conclusion - for the candidates, for the Democratic party and for the people of this country.  These representatives should be, say, and act of their own mind and accord.

[Cross-Posted on my New Blog, Library Grape.] The Obama team made what I consider to be a political masterstroke yesterday by announcing their selection of respected former Congressman Leon Panetta to head the CIA. Although somewhat mixed, the reactions from the intelligence community have included a lot of praise for the Panetta pick: Former inte more...

I think it’s incredible that Beau Biden, the Delaware Attorney General and son of the state’s senior US Senator, went overseas for a tour of duty in the Iraq with his Delaware National Guard Unit. It’s a selfless act of bravery and patriotism. And from a partisan standpoint, I think it’s fantastic because far too few Democ more...

With his ship taking on water quickly, it’s captain- embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich- is still firing his canons wildly. And much to the vexation of Senate Democrats, he’s actually landing some nasty shots. Despite having been charged with attempting use his constitutional appointment powers to sell President-elect Barack more...

The more and more I think about this Palin pick-- the more I digest about her-- the more her selection as McCain's running mate doesn't sit right with me. This is not because I'm a proud Democrat or that I'm an even prouder liberal, but because I'm a thinking human being. I could go on a tirade about how spectacularly unqualified she is for the V more...

Last night, the Clintons started on the long road to redemption among the supporters of Barack Obama, the other segment of the Democratic Party.  There's often a lot of talk about what Obama will do to win over Hillary supporters but not much discussion of the near disrepair of the Bill Clinton legacy.  He had alienated a lot of folks, pa more...

I've thought about it as much as probably everyone else--from the bloggers to the pundits, from the voters to the candidates themselves. But when I tried to narrow down Obama's and McCain's options in the VP race to a point where I could make an informed prediction of who they'd choose, I couldn't. Wait, that's not entirely true. I did have my fa more...
