Hillary Clinton Goes Nuclear

Hillary Clinton is not George W. Bush, but every day it is becoming more and more difficult to see that.

During one of the worst Presidential debates in television history on ABC last week Sen. Clinton made a comment suggesting Iran would have a major price to pay if they ever attacked Israel with nuclear weapons.

That in itself is fine.

But the implication was that Clinton was threatening to strike Iran with nuclear weapons.  In an interview last Monday the Senator from New York confirmed just that when she told MSNBC's Keith Olbermann "their use of nuclear weapons against Israel would provoke a nuclear response from the United States."

Many may see this threat from Clinton as a sign of strength, but the reality is it is a continuation of the George W. Bush belligerence which has proved to be so diplomatically devastating over the past eight years.

Threatening another nation with nuclear weapons is not OK.  Even in a hypothetical scenario in which that nation has used nuclear weapons against our ally.

Even Sen. Clinton's husband had a more diplomatic and measured approach to the U.S. use of nuclear weapons.

The Bill Clinton policy on a nuclear attack was actually to not strike back with a nuclear weapon after the first nuclear attack on the U.S.

The reason?  Bill Clinton didn't want to start a nuclear holocaust over a possible mistake.  If we were hit twice or if the first strike came along with a declaration of war from another nation then a nuclear response would be on the table.

Hillary Clinton is now saying that rather than take that more reasonable, safer approach, she would not only strike back with nuclear force immediately, but she would do it and risk global nuclear war even if one of our allies was attacked.

That, my friends, is crazy talk.

The policy to strike back with a nuclear weapon is bad enough, but to run around during a campaign and flaunt that policy is insane.

In fact, that George W. Bush cowboy talk is precisely why we are losing ground as the global super power.

Any psychologist will tell you that the playground bully, who makes all sorts of belligerent threats, is simply overcompensating for some sort of weakness.  And most people understand that.

The real "tough guy" is the guy who doesn't have to talk about how tough he is.  He stands there with a quiet confidence and with the knowledge that everyone else knows not to mess with him.

The U.S. used to be that cool tough guy, but that is no longer the case.

George W. Bush has turned us into the over compensating playground bully that nobody likes and Hillary Clinton has vowed to continue being the belligerent bully.

For all of Clinton's talk about how bad a job George W. Bush has done as president, and how we need to avoid a "third term" of President Bush, she sure is adopting a lot of his policies.  War with Iraq, potential war with Iran, an unwillingness to engage in diplomacy with our enemies and now threatening the world with a nuclear attack, Hillary Clinton as President will push a continuation of the failed Bush foreign policy.

Discussion:
Excellent post.  I couldn't believe when she said that, or when she elaborated later.  When the campaigns started I felt that even if my guy Barack didn't get it, we would still have a good president in Hillary.  I no longer feel like that.  She has gotten increasingly desperate and is doing and saying things - the worst of which is this 'bring it on so I can nuke you' statement - that are just crazy.  She somehow thinks she must be old machine and almost republican to beat our man?

[Cross-Posted on my New Blog, Library Grape.] The Obama team made what I consider to be a political masterstroke yesterday by announcing their selection of respected former Congressman Leon Panetta to head the CIA. Although somewhat mixed, the reactions from the intelligence community have included a lot of praise for the Panetta pick: Former inte more...

I think it’s incredible that Beau Biden, the Delaware Attorney General and son of the state’s senior US Senator, went overseas for a tour of duty in the Iraq with his Delaware National Guard Unit. It’s a selfless act of bravery and patriotism. And from a partisan standpoint, I think it’s fantastic because far too few Democ more...

With his ship taking on water quickly, it’s captain- embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich- is still firing his canons wildly. And much to the vexation of Senate Democrats, he’s actually landing some nasty shots. Despite having been charged with attempting use his constitutional appointment powers to sell President-elect Barack more...

I have been saying it for months now, Barack Obama is the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party. And now that he has clinched a victory in pledged delegates the remaining contests in Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana are nothing more than a formality. Of those three contests none appear to have a chance to play a roll in the General Ele more...

November 4th, 2008 is rapidly approaching, 161 short days from now.   No one knows for sure what the outcome of the election will be, but yesterday two things became clear; 1). Bob Barr's name will be almost as well known as Ralph Nader's and 2). Barack Obama is likely to receive at least some sort of an Electoral Map boost from Barr in more...

What a difference a day makes. In my last post I narrowed down the Vice Presidential field to the four candidates most likely to be on the ticket with Barack Obama in the fall and today we can already cross Hillary Clinton off of that list. Friday afternoon in an interview with the Argus Leader newspaper in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Hillary Cli more...
