Obama and financing: A good offense is better than the strongest defense
I am glad Senator Obama has chosen to continue with online fundraising. The pundits and the right are having a field day with it though, calling him a flip flopper and saying he doesn't keep his word. I certainly would have thought the campaign would have anticipated this and crafted offensive messages.
Instead of saying "the system is broken" why didn't Senator Obama talk about how he has championed campaign finance reform, cite the evidence and then say I know I signed and said I would take public financing. I did so because at the time, I thought it was the best way eliminate the influence of big money in this campaign and in our politics.
Since then, the American people have shown all of us that there is a better way to empower its citizens and allow the people to fund our campaigns.....and then go on to talk about x number of donations from x number of small donors. He can say they stumbled upon a much more compelling mechanism to give the power to the people and not special interests.
This is a progressive campaign which is flexible, open to ideas and nimble enough to tailor to new information and situations. Changes based on new information should be spun as a strength. To hear him say the system is broken with no explanation of what he means...
I don't know what it means either... leaves him open to assault. Hopefully, it will blow over and will be inconsequential. What do you think? Am I off base?
