Either many people aren't listening to Obama when he makes his assertions and
his arguments for them, or they are deliberately hearing only what they want to
hear. Unfortunately, the latter seems to be the way things are panning out.
Whether Obama has reassessed an old position or created an altogether new one,
he has not been above explaining these positions thoroughly.
He's a thinking man -- a man who doesn't pin his manhood on a steadfast adherence
to ignorance on a subject, especially when he is presented with new evidence.
Yet on the Iraq War, Obama has never wavered. He was dead set against
initiating the war in
In the way that mainstream media and McCain's surrogates reacted to some of
Obama's recent comments on
That statement along with the statement that "It's time for Iraqis to take
responsibility for their future" were uttered by Obama as recently as June
3rd of 2008 in
Apparently some on the Left as well as on the Right don't want to hear the
following truth Obama spoke in response to the manufactured firestorm over his
Iraq comments:
"I was a little puzzled by the frenzy that I set off by what I thought was
a pretty innocuous statement. I am absolutely committed to ending the war...The
tactics of how we ensure our troops are safe as we pull out, how we execute the
withdrawal, those are things that are all based on facts and conditions. I am
not somebody - unlike George Bush - who is willing to ignore facts on the basis
of my preconceived notions."
What's disgusting is that those who call themselves liberal or Democrat or an
Obama supporter actually joined in the chorus of criticism against Obama over this
message he's delivered over and over again since the beginning of his
campaign.
Don't get me wrong: as a supporter of Obama, you have to be vigilant. You have
to hold him accountable on certain issues, like for instance the FISA bill. We
supporters of Obama should give him hell when he's wrong. It's the only way to
ensure that he gets it right. But for us to join in on a ridiculous charge that
somehow he's changed his position on Iraq-- when we act as if with a wave of
his brown hand he'll bring the Iraq War to an end-- we're morphing into the
caricatures that some on the Right make us out to be.
He has always taken a staid, rational stance on
Obama is not a Messiah, he is not a Savior-- he is flawed man. He is a man who
will take a measured approach to certain issues. He is man that has to do so,
especially in cases of war.
Some have suggested that many in this country won't even give Obama, if
elected, the chance to resolve any of this country's issues. And if the actions
of some liberals and conservatives in this latest manufactured controversy are a
preview of what's to come, it's more than just a little disturbing.
Give him a chance to present his case during this general election campaign
period. Don't be so fickle as to accuse him of betraying the extreme Left
because he wants to be the Anti-Bush--because he wants to be a thoughtful
leader who considers every angle of a situation and who isn't as narrow-minded
as to dismiss an opposing view off the top, well... just because.
I tend to agree with Obama that the war has shifted to
Because we've neglected the real fight, the Al Qaeda is resurging
stronger than ever.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki recently spoke in regards to a timetable on
The civilian loss there is unconscionable as well is our soldier loss.
But McCain would have us believe, as one of his surrogates implied, that Obama
has changed his mind on the fact that the Iraq War was wrong. Instead, McCain
would be wrong on that. As well as he is wrong that the true battle is in
All of us supporters had better become clear on Obama's stances so that none of
us are duped into indicting him for both a position that the other side now
distorts and a position that we had all supported and encouraged by voting
Obama the Democratic nominee.
