As promised last week, here are the top 5 choices as selected by the EOO community.
5. Gen. Wesley Clark
As expected, Clark slid from his top spot after the controversy over his remarks about John McCain's service broke. I don't hear anyone talking about the flap anymore, so it's safe to say the story has died down. We'll find out this week if Clark, the contender with the best resumé of the bunch, makes it to the top 3.
4. Michael Bloomberg
It looks increasingly likely that McCain will select Romney as his VP, and one of the reasons is that the economy is shaping up to be the hot button issue of this election. Selecting Bloomberg as Romney's sparring partner could be a wise move, and may help assuage the fears of voters that Obama will be anti-Israel.
3. Sen. Claire McCaskill
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill stayed in the running this week, and has done better in our voting than I would have predicted. She is a top Obama surrogate and advocates on his behalf as well, or better than anybody. I think her big problem is that she pulls from the same base of support as Obama, and has had trouble reaching out to rural voters in her home state.
2. Gov. Brian Schweitzer
Governor Schweitzer has consistently been in the top tier of contenders in our Veepstakes voting, and it's no wonder why. Schweitzer is one of the most popular governors in the country, and has a down to earth attitude about him that would be a good foil to Obama's rock star appeal. I don't think it's possible for anyone, much less Obama, to be gravity-defying and down to earth at the same time, and so picking someone who can act as Obama's ambassador to middle America makes political sense. Schweitzer is an outsider as well, and that would reinforce the change brand that the Obama campaign is pushing.
1. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius
What's the matter with Kansas ? Well, it's not Kathleen
Sebelius. She, more than any other contender, embodies the post
partisan message espoused by Barack Obama. Sebelius has successfully
"converted" the former Republican chair and recruited him as her
running mate. Still, she has not shied away from butting heads with
President Bush and has successfully beaten back the energy industries
expansion plans in her state. There have been two major arguments
against her: first, that she doesn't have enough personality and
charisma for the national stage, and secondly, that she is not
Hillary.
70,000 votes later, we have our top 5. Two more will be cut in a week, so make sure you come back to vote. Come back tomorrow, when I'll list my top 5 sleeper picks for VP.
