5 Reasons Sarah Palin Would Lose a 2012 Presidential Bid

Sarah PalinBefore John McCain’s presidential bid had even ended, many were touting Sarah Palin as a possible GOP presidential candidate for 2012. And in an interview with Matt Lauer this morning, Palin said that, “if there is a door open in 2012 or four yeas later…then I’ll plow through that door.”

If Sarah Palin tries to run for president in 2012, she’ll get plowed over. In fact, she probably wouldn’t even make it out of the primary. Palin-watchers can take their pick from a plethora of reasons as to why.

Reason Number 1: Too Many Better Candidates

The dust hasn’t even settled from the 2008 contest, and Republicans are already salivating over who the next GOP presidential nominee will be. To be sure, Palin’s name is among those that are being floated as possible candidates, along with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and South Dakota Senator John Thune.  But does it really stand out?

Experience-wise, every single one of those candidates puts Palin to shame. Additionally, each of those candidate brings far more expertise to the table than Palin. And maybe that will change over the next four years. But in the meantime, Romney is seen by many as an expert on economic issues by virtue of his successful construction (and later resuscitation) of Bain Capital, and given current economic concerns, that could be a big arrow in his quiver. Newt Gingrich and Tim Pawlenty are probably the truest conservatives of the bunch, and in fact would probably be more solidly aligned with the conservative base than any GOP candidate since George H.W. Bush was the nominee as the incumbent president back in 1992. Candidates like Jindal and Thune are largely considered by many to be the future of the Republican Party. Palin would have a difficult time distinguishing herself from the breadth of possibility in that field.

Reason Number 2: The Primary Process Has A Heavy Debate Emphasis

The 2008 presidential election season was unprecedented in the visibility of candidates. En route to the nomination, John McCain participated in 17 debates in the primary race alone. Few will argue with the assertion that Sarah Palin is at her worst in (a) debates, and (b) one-on-one interviews. It was a constant worry of the McCain campaign, and a primary reason behind the fact that Palin only debated Democratic vice-presidential nominee (and now Vice President-elect) Joe Biden one time. On that occasion, expectations going into the forum were lowered to a point that essentially credited Palin with an incredible performance as long as she managed to avoid a catastrophic failure.

She wouldn’t have that benefit if she were on the stage with Romney (a prolific debater), Gingrich, Jindal, Thune, or Pawlenty, to say nothing of any other GOP candidates who might jump in the race.

Reason Number 3: The GOP Favors Candidates Who’ve Sought the Presidency Before

With the exception of George W. Bush, Republicans tend to favor candidates who’ve sought the nomination before. John McCain (’08), Bob Dole (‘96), George H.W. Bush (‘92, ‘88), Ronald Reagan (‘80, ‘84), Richard Nixon (‘72, ‘68), Barry Goldwater (‘64)- all of them sought the GOP nomination at least one time before eventually winning it (Gerald Ford is absent from the list, because he was the incumbent president and nominee in ‘76 without ever actually having been elected president in the first place). That kind of news bodes well for a candidate like Mitt Romney, who made a substantial impact in 2008, but fell short.

Reason Number 4: Barack Obama Already Defeated Sarah Palin

Palin participated in a Republican ticket that got handed its worst electoral beating since 1964. On the safe assumption that Barack Obama would seek a second term in 2012 2008, she’d be facing the same guy who demolished her ticket the first time around.

Moreover, Obama didn’t just beat McCain-Palin in swing states.  He didn’t even just beat them in states that are only moderately Republican. He beat them in GOP strongholds like North Carolina and Virginia. Palin was brought in as McCain’s running mate not only to make an offensive run at women, but also to shore up conservative and rural support. She couldn’t do it. It’s hard to see how she’d have any better luck on her own four years from now.

Reason Number 5: Palin Has Enough Baggage

Between Troopergate, her use of campaign funds for a pricey shopping spree, her former membership in an Alaskan separatist group, and her history of handing out high-paying government patronage jobs to her girlfriends from high school and college, Palin had a lot weighing her down in the 2008 race before her qualifications were even addressed. Romney’s biggest problem was that he began as a much more liberal politician than he is now. But that pales in comparison to Palin’s ethically questionable behavior. Gingrich had an extramarital affair, but he admitted that years ago, so it’s not really a newsworthy issue anymore. And Jindal, Pawlenty, and Thune are clean…for now anyway. Palin will have a tough time getting voters to look past her problems, particularly when there are other more qualified candidates to choose from who don’t have that kind of baggage.

 ...

It’s not to say that Sarah Palin will never have a shot at the White House.  In fact, if she were to run for reelection as Governor of Alaska in 2010, and Alaska’s Senate seat in 2014 (whether it’s Ted Stevens or Mark Begich or someone else in that seat), she might have a decent shot by 2016.  But 2012 is a lost cause.  And if Democrats know what’s good for them, they’ll hope Palin pulls the trigger on her own presidential bid sooner rather than later.

If  the Republican party wants to choose folksiness over intelligence, Sarah Palin is the way to go. If they want someone more serious and smart, they would keep looking. Sarah Palin is just a joke. She needs to read some more. Her campaign rallies were filled with hate. In addition, she only caters to a small group of Americans, the ones that are racists. America does not need her kind of divisiveness.

I don't know what'll happen in four years, but I do know that if they nominate Palin, it means that they have doubled down on the politics that got them into this mess.

First  let me just say there was no way Obama could beat Clinton in the primary either. Anybody remember that ? So anything is possible, even Palin being the President of the United States. 4 years is a long time in the world of politics.  I dont believe Republicans would nominate her just because of the perception she brings.(see the comments on the this post for that perception). Romney will probably be the nominee although he will lose in 2012 unless Obama makes some giant mistakes. Bobby Jindal the Governor of Louisiana will be the next true contender  for President from the Republican party. He will not run in 2012 though. He will be President in 2016 if he continues on the path hes on now. I personally feel he would be a good President. Oh yeah Palin and Biden only debating once was not the choice of Palin's handlers. Thats just the way its done

Palin has no chance in 2012 and she's insuring that by her own actions: grabbing every interview she can get, talking incoherently, as usual, and reminding everyone again that she has no base of knowledge. We've just had 8 years of leaadership marked by incompetence, which didn't work out too well.

Competence, indeed excellence, is what most voters want now and, I think, why so many voted for Obama.

Palin is inarticulate to the point that you question if she can even think logically. There's no way to educate or remediate someone with mental deficits that extreme. And her most glaring fault is her inability to recognize her shortcomings and her mind-boggling presumption that she's in the same league as other presidential contenders. She's a clown.

She has become my single fa. Politician in recent memory.
Who else has the power to fracture the Republican Party and possible force the religious right out.
A run in 2012 could be the end of the role of the Christian Coalition in major politics. Something that has been a along time coming.

Um, she is the religious right. She wants to teach creationism in public schools for crying out loud.

[-] Mr. - Guest-Double Um
Double Um. I think the point he's trying to make is that her very "extremeness" and "religiosity" is precisely the reason she will break the party up by eventually getting the truly dyed-in-the-wool social conservatives kicked out of the party.

Fact is, Republican Party won't be electable again, or elected, until it returns to core libertarian values. Samll Government. Ie - what the hell is the Patriot Act but a giant intervention into our daily lives? Wire-tapping without a warrant! For heaven's sake - what sort of devil has the Republican Party sold its soul to to endorse this type of claptrap.

If Palin is the candidate - Obama is guaranteed a 2nd Term. Guaranteed. She'd be kinda like Kerry in '04 - except worse, she wouldn't lose by a single state, she'd lose by more than McCain did.

Minor quibble: The number and format of the debates in the general election, both for the presidential and the vice-presidential candidates, was made long before either Biden or Palin was selected as a running mate. There was always going to be just one VP debate.

Other than that, these are all good reasons.

One more thing to point out: while Palin does energize certain parts of the base, she also turns off more libertarian Republicans. Palin was the reason I could not bring myself to vote for McCain this year.

It is amazing to watch the media, the left, and the centrist right go to extreme measures to attempt to destroy Sarah Palin's reputation. Most of the "baggage" attributed to her appears contrived to me, and, for many, she was the only energizing aspect of McCain's campaign.

Prior to the Palin pick, our country had to pick from the Democrat or the Liberal. This was the first truly conservative thing McCain did this year. And had he continued to do truly conservative things (such as vote against the bailout package), he might be in the white house. Instead, he should his true colors as a compromiser and a Washington insider instead of the maverick that he claimed to be.

Palin was a breath of fresh air after many years of weak or flawed conservative candidates. 4 more years is only going to help her with more experience and polish. If she wasn't such a strong contender, the liberal media wouldn't be going all out to neutralize her now.

[-] It's just amazement - Guest-JF
Putting political differences aside, an even cursory glance at Palin makes it plain that she shouldn't be in any high office. Most of the "bashing" I see of her is simple astonishment that someone could be so clueless and borderline idiotic, and so completely without self-awareness about it. Her constant double-standards and equivocations alone also give her a strong reek of corruption, even before we get into the whole abuse of power thing. She is objectively completely unsuitable for office.

After all that, we can get to her political positions -- which I find scarily theocratic. However, this is an area where honest people can differ, so doesn't generate so much amazement.

If you wish to think of her as a strong candidate, pleas do! I, for one, would be thrilled to see her on the ballot. It would go a long way to keeping the Reps out of office.

Seems being a compleat dolt doesn't rule people out of running for high office in America. I would have though America had learned its lesson with George W Bush and the utter mess he made in eight long years. That Sarah Palin is even being considered as a future candidate for President is just ludicrous. Intelligent leaders make intelligent decisions, which is why George W Bush and Sarah Palin made really stupid decisions.

Number 4; Obama has already beat Palin, may be the silver bullet. With that said, the will and power of the religious right may be enough to push her through the primaries. These voters are dedicated and will turn out. Of course a more qualified candidate who also has God's hear may smoke her pretty bad.

Palin lacks substance. Palin has been able to float on her looks, glamour girl smile, and pageant wave but she’s already starting to look old. Another four years and people won’t see the beauty and charm, they will be looking for the substance—something Palin will never have.

Troopergate is a non-issue. It's the job of a governor to fire employees who show that they cannot keep the public's trust, and that's most certainly what the trooper she got fired did. Too often, police forces and the appointees above them, defend crooked cops, so she was in the right for firing the appointee that stood up for the officer.

As a civil libertarian, I would like to think that she would have fired any state trooper who tasered his own 11 year old son/step-son, among other crimes.

When she was asked the rape/abortion question, and all Palin said was that they would support the mother and look for someone to adopt the baby after they were born. Well that sounds hunky dory! What if it was a father raping his daughter? Haven't you all seen Chinatown?

She danced around with her words the whole time to avoid saying this: she wants it to be illegal for a victim of rape to choose to not have their rapist's baby.

....is a huge mistake for any Republican facing her in the primary or President-elect Barack Obama in the general. Why do you think Obama's allies in the media are so ready to report any whisper coming out of the campaign?

Palin's got a long way to go, but with a little more experience, more thought on national issues, the proper campaign platform, and a tough fight in the primary race I don't see why Sarah Palin couldn't be the nominee in 2012 or 2016 (I'd reccomend the latter for her because unless he's an utter disaster ala Carter, President Obama is sure to be popular.) Would I have been comfortable with her as President today? Probably not. (Though she's sure as hell better than Joe Biden, God protect Barack Obama!) But give her a few years.

People may not want to admit it but Palin and Obama mirror each other in many ways.
In they're mass appeal, natural charisma, both are photogenic, young, can draw big crowds and ratings, are "cool" (both played ball) and entered with a big splash. It goes on...

BUT to win in 2012 she will need to have the steadiness and campaign operation savvy Obama showed. So far she has appeared erratic and has had major drama in the only national campaign she has been apart of. She'll need to work on that to succeed.

Thank you for this website. It's great.
Let's assume that Sarah Palin is nominated as the GOP candidate. Barack Obama will shred her to pieces. She is no comparison to Hillary & Obama out-did her. Sarah doesn't have a chance against him in a million years. He's too classy, too smart (a Harvard graduate), too clean while she's not Ivy League & not as educated as him. Plus, if you look at the US recent history, no failed VP candidate, with the exception of Johnson & Ford (who were not elected) has made it as a nominee, let alone to the White House. Plus, the five points which have been cited in this article. Sarah Palin for President??? When hell freezes over.

You say Palin can't win in a debate. On the contrary - she manipulates questions so she can say what she wants, which is to undermine her opponents' credibility. Most people don't notice that trick, but it does tear down opponents. I wouldn't write her off as a poor debater AT ALL. And I'm not even Republican.
