Why I am Supporting Barack Obama
I am making this formal announcement, although I am sure many of you
know I already support Senator Obama in his bid for the Presidency, and have posted a similar snippet on my Facebook.
I, like many Americans, used to carry a sick feeling in my stomach when talking about politics. There would be no salvation, to hero to come and rescue us from the depths that American politics has sunk to. We think of past Presidents like Kennedy or Roosevelt, sigh, and think to ourselves "I guess they just don't make'em like they used to."
Politics for me, became an epic struggle, not against the forces of evil, but the forces of the lesser evil. Stop the worst from happening, and eventually the caterpillar of progress will inch along, making the next decade marginally better then the last.
It became a quest to wrestle control of the media away from the 5 corporation oligarchy ruling it now; to seize the Fed from the hands of private banks and put it under the control of the American people, to cut corporate lobbyist money out of politics all together; and for a while, it seemed like We Many Hopeless had no Captain, O Captain.
And then Barack emerged from the horror of 2004, elected to the Senate with bipartisan support from the people of Illinois.
And with him arrived Hope. On the verge of being crushed, Obama arrived not a moment too soon, and by popular demand, the freshman Senator from Illinois was drafted into his current Presidential bid.
But why?
Because I am sick of feeling like I do not own the government that my family and friends and I pay taxes to support; because I am sick of feeling out of control of the decisions our leaders make that directly impact our lives; because I am sick of being manipulated by fear, being controlled by political machines and American dynasties.
Why else? I long for the Hope that Senator Obama speaks of; because I want my kids to feel this way and because I am sick of the hate and divisiveness breeding uncontrollably in our country. I am sick of Clinton. I am sick of Bush. I am sick of the liars, the cheats, the cowards, the plotters, these demons in human skin stealing our freedom and selling to the highest bidder.
The next decade will determine our path for generations; of new nuclear powers, diplomatic and military showdowns, of genocide, of a sliding dollar and social security, of health care for our sick, of education for our young, of the despair of our neighbors who flee to us for help and are met with blind eyes and deaf ears, of the integrity of our electorate and the very process by which laws are made, and of the woman's right to choose what happens to her own body, of the way we conduct political discourse.
This, many feel, is America's last chance, and that Barack Obama is our last hope, the final star by which we may navigate through this storm to safety in these treacherous waters.
I support Senator Obama because I have found that there is tremendous power in Hope - strength immeasurable.
Godspeed, Senator.
