Bill Clinton stole the headlines today, as newspapers and media outlets across the country heralded his success in securing the release of two American journalists from a North Korean jail, following a personal visit by the former president to the rogue nation. The two reporters, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, had been sentenced to twelve years in prison for writing defamatory articles against the government. Both worked for Current TV, the award-winning network co-founded by Al Gore, who spent considerable time working the back channels to help arrange the meeting between Clinton and ailing North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il. About 18 months ago, no one would have thought that Clinton, then campaigning to help his wife win the Democratic presidential nomination, could have upstaged Obama, especially on the world stage. Despite the 42nd president's widespread popularity abroad when he left office in 2000, Obama's young face and fresh message took the international community by surprise. During trips overseas, Obama drew record crowds soaring into the millions, a feat achieved by few American political leaders in recent history. And while Clinton has spent the first seven months of Obama's presidency- as well as his wife's tenure as Secretary of State- largely out of the spotlight, his triumphant emergence today has done more for Obama than any goodwill ambassador so far. If nothing else, Clinton pushes the doom and gloom off of the front page, and replaces it with a story that makes Americans feel proud of their country and their leaders. Clinton's victory is especially important in rebuilding America's image on the foreign stage. World renowned for his diplomatic efforts while in office, he saw much of the goodwill he built over eight years as president- from establishing tighter relations with Russia to halting genocide in the Balkans- squandered as his successor, George W. Bush, adopted what was at times a cavalier approach to foreign relations, from his withdrawal from strategic arms treaties that soothed tensions during the Cold War to his pursuit of military action in Iraq without waiting for any semblance of international support. Obama swept into office with a commitment to do just what Clinton did, to restore America to the grand position it once held as a beacon of peace, diplomacy, and human rights among nations. And even while the turbulent economic climate has pushed him against the wall here at home, he was able to bring that campaign promise to fruition with Clinton's help. The news also ends a long period of speculation as to just what kind of role Clinton would play in Obama's administration. If Obama continues to use Clinton as he has thus far, the former president can act as a closer on the world stage, a one-two punch alongside the younger Obama, whose image internationally is considerable in its own right. |

but perhaps you are overamplifying the effect this has on the Obama administration both here and abroad.
not sure how Obama was upstaged today, either. not sure that things are bleaker today than they were six months ago, either. but like i said, kudos to bill. you have every right to sing his praises. thanks! |

or maybe it makes people more nostalgic for the Clintons and the 90's.. who knows.. I don't see Obama mentioned regarding this situation by anyone in the media... It's a Clinton victory and I'm just glad that they are back with their friends and families.

played, which was essentially as escort. Yes the N. Koreans insisted on him after rejecting the choice of Gore and several others. But the release had been negotiated prior to his involvement.

It's not like Clinton came in like Mighty Mouse "Here i come to save the daaaaaaaaaaaaaay"; he was the last piece of a very intricate puzzle and the bulk of the heavy lifting was done before he left for North Korea.
That is not to diminish his role at all; he still had to be clutch or it all could have fallen apart... but this was not a clutch performance from a ringer; it was a team effort, including his wife the Sec'y of State, Al Gore, POTUS/VPOTUS etc... All had their roles to play and had any dropped the ball it goes to hell Congrats to all involved; well played. |

The Obama administration was considering several different envoys weeks ago. Bill Clinton's popularity and respect on the world stage is an important component to the release of Lee and Ling and perhaps it'll be spinned as a Bill Clinton victory by the media, but there should be no doubt that it was Hillary and the Obama administration who did the heavy lifting here.

The tooth of a military is its front lines. The tail of a military, in theory, handles logistics, strategy and supply. Just as a rattlesnake missing its teeth or its tail would be defenseless or dead, the same goes for an army.
In this case, Clinton was the tooth and POTUS/SoS were the tail. Best of all, Clinton is far more popular abroad than he is here. So, to the rest of the world, Kim Jong Il looks great with Bill Clinton. To us Americans (particularly nursing wounds from Primary Wars 2008), Kim Jong Il is getting B-list talent. |

in a similar situation?
I highly doubt it. Because then they would have been [BUSH VOICE]"talking with the terrorists!" [/BUSH VOICE] Another question: Could you imagine Bush being sent in a similar fashion? Hah. It's sad how little respect our former President holds around the world. |

impressed with President Obama everyday. He could have nixed this entire thing and yet he basically said "hey, whatever works to bring these women home ... DO IT!!
He is so freakin far beyond the "who gets credit" issue that he is actually changing politics as we know it. I was a total Hillary supporter but now believe that both Bill and Hill can and have learned from a man who will probably end up being the best President the United State has ever had. |

Obama administration a positive story that would play in the media for at least 2 or 3 days. It's a breather really. They needed a good story and they got it.
While the media are covering the release of the 2 journalists, the failure(s) of the health care bill is not going to splashed 24 hours a day on TV screens. |

Umm...what do I have to say...?
What everyone just said! What an awesome and brilliant concensus there guys. |

the big story these last days has been cash for clunkers, which is solidifying the public's view that Obama needs to go BIGGER on helping the economy and senate repubs stand in the way--just like on health care.
Obama has had a great 5 days. |

Particularly when public outlook is getting bleak, and polling numbers are dropping precipitously, there's nothing quite like a dose of good news to get things back on the right track. And for President Barack Obama, whose administration had enjoyed incredible success and public support until it hit a PR snag with landmark health care reform legislation, that good news took on an unlikely form.
