About Moderate / Conservative Values

It's pretty clear that one of the few attack lines available to the Republicans will be to label Obama as a liberal. Selecting a running mate with moderate / conservative bona fides could help mute that argument.

VP Opinion Articles on Eyes On Obama

Chuck Hagel

Republican Senator from Nebraska

Strengths:

Military Service, Foreign Policy, Moderate / Conservative Values

Short Bio

Hagel has been one of the few staunch critics among Republicans of the Iraq War. He is a decorated Vietnam Vet, successful businessman, and has served as senator since 1997.

Our Take

With the exception for the Iraq War, Hagel is a strong conservative. Picking him would probably make the Democratic base revolt. Given that he is retiring, he is a shoe-in for Secretary of Defense in an Obama Administration.

In a perfect world this might actually happen.  However unlikely, I still believe that Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska is the perfect candidate to be Barack Obama’s running mate.  His denouncement of the Iraq War and the ideology of the Bush Administration and the other Neo Cons in the Republican Party only further legitimize Obama’s message and position on such issues.  Liberals will like Hagel because he said that Bush should be impeached, especially if he plans to go to war with Iran.  Sen. Hagel has executive, foreign policy, and national security experience and is admired by many veterans.  As much as it may scare some democrats that a republican would be on the ticket, just think of what this opportunity would present.  Hagel would be the perfect attack dog and would pretty much blow John McCain and the republicans out of the water.  He is the maverick that McCain used to be and this would help highlight the change that has bestowed Sen. McCain.  He is not what he used to be and is more like President Bush every day.  Let’s pick Hagel and prevent another 4 years of Bush.

Exactly. Hagel wants to be SecDef. He is the ideological mirror image of Joe Lieberman.
