About Foreign Policy

The economy may be the number one issue, but we're a terrorist attack away from foreign policy expertise becoming a primary concern. Not that McBush has any expertise of his own...

VP Opinion Articles on Eyes On Obama

Short Bio

Hillary Clinton is the former First Lady of Arkansas and of the United States, and the current Senator from New York. She has been Barack Obama's main competition in his presidential bid.

Our Take

If you don't know who Senator Clinton is or why she will be strongly considered for the VP spot, you must have just come out of cryo-stasis. Choosing her means Obama believes that 1+1=2, namely that selecting her would neatly combine his coalition with hers. If we've learned anything from the primary season though, it's that political calculus is rarely that simple.

Bad choice - reason? - your math of 1+1=2 would relate to putting Bill on the ticket too. The Hill and Bill Show as VP might get Obama the White House, but it would be a sure bet of only netting Obama a ONE term.

I am replying to Socrates' post on here regarding the reasons why Hillary would be a poor choice for VP. I am also watching MSNBC's primary coverage. Right now, McCain is speaking, nauseatingly.

So...the elephant in the room? HILLARY WANTS OBAMA DEAD so she can take his place.  If you saw her face during that creepy interview in South Dakota, when she was so brightly speculating on assassinations in June, you know what I mean. All along, she has justified her continued candidacy by saying "something catastrophic could happen."

So no...offer her the VP if she guarantees refusal, which is what the MSNBCwww.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/#22887506 commentators are discussing, or offer her a cabinet post as Health and Welfare Secretary. But nothing in direct succession to the Presidency if Hillary's hoped-for catastrophe should, God forbid, happen.

Richardson? A decent guy. I'd rather see him as Secretary of State with his diplomatic experience. My pick? Wesley Clark. But if not VP, Clark would make a fine Secretary of Defense.

Now, it's all very interesting what top Republicans are doing with the antagonism between Clinton and Obama.  They would really like this to keep stirred up. Rove was saying today that the DNC's decision to take away her four Michigan delegates, and give them to Obama was like "sticking a finger in her eye."  I think this was on the Huffington post somewhere; I'll post a link if I find it. Ummm..since when did Karl Rove care a damn about what a Clinton felt?

McCain, right now, is saying that the "pundits" have declared Obama the winner - the implication being that, as Hillary's supporters claim, Obama somehow cheated, and the numbers lie.  This is, of course, utter nonsense.

My point is that Republicans would love for the antagonism between the Democratic candidates to continue and to escalate. For that reason alone, a cooperative, convivial relatonship between the two would take a lot of energy from Rove's "divide and conquer" strategy.

So let's enjoy the end of primary season tonight, and let the VP speculation take a back seat to celebrating the nomination of the most exciting candidate Democrats have fielded in decades!
